Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut near the Pit River Arm of Shasta Lake.

THP 2-13-059 SHA (McChicken THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 282 acres; 88% clearcut, 11% rehab, 1% roadside logging.  Ingot, McCandless Gulch (MD: T34N R1W Sec.19, 30; T34N R2W Sec.13, 24, 25).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes over 65%, 10 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, oversized units, bald eagle nest within 1 mi, Shasta salamander, Shasta snow wreath, scattered large trees. Estimated public comment deadline: 10/23/13. 

This THP is about 5 miles SW of Round Mountain, and a few miles north of Highway 299 near the Pit River Arm of Lake Shasta.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation in Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, sugar pine, and incense cedar forest at an elevation of 1,300 to 2,400 feet.  Over 3,525 feet of new road construction, and 13,035 feet of road re-construction are planned, and units 24A and 30B are oversized.  Ten road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert maintenance.  There were 3 occurrences of Shasta Salamander reported at nearby Cedar Creek, and a bald eagle nest site was reported to be within 1 mi of section 14.  Shasta snow wreath was found within units 30B and 30C, and slender false lupine was found within unit 25E. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
