THP 2-13-072 PLU (Ali THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 775 acres; 77% clearcut, 19% fuel break, 4% commercial thin logging.  Peninsula Village (MD: T28N R8E Sec.5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 16, 17; T29N R7E Sec.24; T29N R8E Sec.19, 29, 30, 31, 32).  Winter operations, low erosion hazard, slopes up to 30%, oversized units, herbicides, 1 CA spotted owl within 2.7 mi, 4 osprey nests within 2 mi, 2012 gray wolf sighting, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 11/18/13.

This THP is about 5 miles east of Chester, and just above Lake Almanor Peninsula, a popular golf course resort community.  The THP area is also within .75 mi of Lake Almanor, and adjacent to Highway 36.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor based logging operation in mixed conifer forests at an elevation of 4,760 to 5,520 feet.  The THP contains oversized units, and SPI is planning to construct so called short "jump roads" to connect clearcut units with existing roads and landings.  Bald eagles and goshawks have been seen nearby, and 4 osprey nests are located within 2 mi, with 2 nests within .5 mi of the THP area.  “Journey”, California’s only gray wolf was sighted in the THP area in May of 2012. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
