Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log near Eagle Lake.

THP 2-13-077 LAS (Kotkajarvi THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 284 acres; 75% clearcut, 25% commercial thin logging.  Fox Mtn. (MD: T31N R10E Sec.14; T31N R11E Sec.8, 17, 18, 19, 20).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, slopes up to 30%, herbicides, 1 bald eagle territory within 1.5 mi, 7 osprey territories within 1.4 mi, osprey nest in unit 19, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 11/28/13.

This THP is adjacent to the southern shore of Eagle Lake, near the Eagle Lake Road and Marina, Merrill Creek campground and Camp Ronald McDonald.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor based logging operation in ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, white fir, Douglas fir, incense cedar and sugar pine forest at an elevation of 5,200 to 5,500 feet.  They will be using temporary short "jump roads" to connect existing roads and landings.  There is a bald eagle nest within 1.5 mi of the THP area, and 7 osprey territories within .7 mi to 1.4 mi from the THP area, and 1 osprey nest in unit 19.  A historic (1991) detection of a Sierra Nevada red fox was reported adjacent to the THP area at Eagle Lake, and a historic (1988) detection of a pair of sandhill cranes were reported to be .25 miles from the THP area at Papoose Meadows. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
