Mendocino Redwood Company to log on steep and unstable slopes near Boonville, CA.

THP 1-13-104 MEN (Mountain View THP) Mendocino Redwood Company, 203 acres; 61% transition, 29% selection, 10% variable retention logging.  North Fork Alder Creek, Lamour Creek, Victoria Fork (MD: T13N R15W Sec.23, 24, 25, 26).  Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 85%, landslide terrain, road failure sites, 22 road drainage work sites, herbicides, impaired 303.d watershed, coho watershed, 3 spotted owls within .7 mi, trees over 36". This THP is about 6.3 miles SW of Boonville, CA at an elevation of 1040 to 2400 feet.  Mendocino Redwood Company is planning a tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable roads in Douglas fir and redwood forests. The THP area flows into Alder Creek and the Garcia River which is listed as impaired for sediment and temperature, and contains coho, chinook salmon and steelhead.  There are road failure sites including a skid road that has sunk down, a fill failure on a seasonal road and a cutbank slough on a seasonal road.  Mendocino Redwood Company is planning to use tractor roads on unstable slopes to avoid crossing a county road, and to use tractor roads on steep slopes over 65%.  22 road drainage sites are planned for work including ditch cleaning, rocking, dip construction, culvert repair/replacement and road bed stabilization. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
