Gale Creek, Grizzly Gulch, St. Catherine Creek, Luck Dog Creek (MD: T18N R9E Sec.1, 2, 3, 5, 7; T19N R9E Sec.13, 23, 25, 30, 33). Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 70%, steep roads, 13 unstable areas, 32 road drainage work sites, herbicides, impaired 303.d watershed, 10 CA spotted owls within 1.3mi, 5 foothill yellow legged frog sightings within .8mi, Ahart’s buckwheat, trees up to 140 years old. This THP is about 14 miles NE of Nevada City, CA and a few miles east of Camptonville, CA and Highway 49 near the North Fork of the Yuba River. Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a tractor and cable logging operation in ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, incense cedar, sugar pine and white fir forest at an elevation of 2,800 to 4,800 feet. There are 4 unstable areas in section 33, 3 unstable areas in section 25, 2 unstable areas in section 2, 2 unstable areas in section 3, and 2 unstable areas in section 7. Tractor operations are proposed for operation on 2 older pre-gold rush unstable areas, and road construction is proposed on an unstable area. Tractors are proposed for use in 2 units designated for cable logging for yarding, tail holds and to construct firelines on slopes less than 65%. Tractors are also proposed for use on a 2 acre portion of unit 07 that has slopes exceeding 65%, and for use on a 2 acre portion of unit 1304 that contains slopes over 50% that do not flatten before reaching a watercourse. A portion of a haul road is proposed for use inside a class II watercourse, and 2 segments of road construction are proposed on steep slopes over 65% adjacent to to a class III watercourse. 32 road drainage sites are proposed for work including rocking, dip construction, and culvert repair and replacement. Ahart’s Buckwheat was found in the project area within section 13. There are 10 CA spotted owls within 1.4 miles, the closest being with .3 miles of THP units.
