Sierra Pacific Industries planning to log near the Eel River.

THP 1-13-112 HUM (Cab THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 383 acres; 68% clearcut, 23% commercial thinning, 9% selection, 1% roadside logging.  Cameron Creek (HUM: T2S R3E Sec.11, 12, 13, 14; T2S R4E Sec.7, 8, 17, 18).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, slopes up to 50%, 2 unstable areas, oversized units, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, 11 spotted owls within 1.3mi, golden eagle within .5 mi, 3 sensitive plant species, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 01/03/14. VIEW

This THP is about 5 miles NE of Myers Flat and Highway 101 at an elevation of 480 to 1,800 feet.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a tractor and cable logging operation in Douglas fir and redwood forest.  The THP area flows into the Eel River which is an important steelhead and coho fishery, and is listed as impaired for sediment and siltation.  There are 2 small unstable areas near a road and a watercourse.  Golden eagle nests were reported to be .5 mi north of the THP area, and there are 11 spotted owl sites within 1.3 miles, with the closest site being within 1,000 feet of the THP area. Heartleaf twayblade was reported to be located within sections 7, 8 and 11, Oregon fawn lily was reported to be located within sections 7, 12 and 13, and Howell’s montia was reported to be located within sections 7 and 18. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
