Collins Pine Company planning THP west of Lake Almanor.

THP 2-13-104 PLU (Baccala THP) Collins Pine Company, 2900 acres; 99% group selection, 1% meadow restoration, 1% no-harvest logging.  Upper Coyote Flat, Johnson Creek, Soldier Creek, Lower Coyote Flat, Shanghai Creek (MD: T27N R6E Sec.2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 17; T28N R6E Sec.26, 27, 33, 34, 35).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, slopes up to 55%, 39 road drainage work sites, herbicides, butt mountain roadless area, 3 CA spotted owls within 1.3mi, bald eagle within 10 ft, goshawk within .75 mi, osprey sightings, trees over 40" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 01/20/14. VIEW

This THP is about 3 miles SW of Chester, CA near Lake Almanor at an elevation of 4,800 to 6,500 feet.  Collins Pine Company is planning a tractor and cable logging operation in ponderosa pine, sugar pine, white fir, incense cedar and Douglas fir forests.  Sections 5 and 8 are close to the Butt Mountain Roadless Area.  The THP includes 20 acres of cutting of conifers around aspen stands and a meadow.  Collins Pine is planning to use a seasonal road and 5 skid trails inside a class I watercourse, and 5 landings inside a class III watercourse.  There are 39 road drainage sites planned for work including rocking, dip construction, and culvert repair/replacement.  One Bald Eagle nest is located within 10 feet of the THP area, and 1 CA spotted owl nest is located within 30 feet of the THP area. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
