Barnum Timber Company to log on steep and unstable slopes NW of Willow Creek, CA.

THP 1-14-014 HUM (Moon Creek THP) Barnum Timber Company, 307 acres; 48% clearcut, 31% selection, 12% shelterwood, 7% rehab, 1% roadside logging.  Toss-up Creek (HUM: T7N R3E Sec.16, 17, 21, 22, 28).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes over 65%, landslide terrain, road failure sites, 57 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, oversized units, herbicides, coho watershed, 9 spotted owls within 1.3mi, white flowered rein orchid, fawn lily, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 03/18/14. VIEW

This THP is about 11 miles NW of Willow Creek, CA and about 3 miles NE of the Highway 299 coast range summit at an elevation of 800 to 2,000 feet.  The THP area flows into Redwood Creek which is listed as impaired for sediment and siltation. Barnum Timber Company is planning a  tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood and Douglas fir forests.  There are 16 landslide terrain sites including steep headwall scarps, earth flows, rockslides, disrupted ground and debris slides.  Multiple road failure sites are located within the THP area including fill failures and cut bank failures related to watercourse crossings.  Barnum Timber Company is planning to construct a road near a slide prone area below unit 10, and on landslide terrain in unit 9.  They also want to use ground based equipment on steep slopes over 65% grade, use ground based equipment on unstable terrain, and to use ground based equipment on skid trails within class II and class III watercourses inside units 3, 7 and 11. 57 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert repair and replacement.  Three groups of white flowered rein orchid were found adjacent to unit 7, and 5 groups of fawn lily were found adjacent to units 1,2 and 3.  For spotted owl site HUM0406; this THP will remove 73 acres of nesting/roosting habitat within .7 mi, and 3.1 acres of foraging habitat within .7 mi; for spotted owl site HUM0526, this THP will remove 17.3 acres of nesting/roosting habitat within .7 mi, and 24.8 acres of foraging habitat within .7 mi. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
