Green Diamond Resource Company to clearcut log adjacent to Redwood National Park

THP 1-14-093 HUM (BL 1300 15 THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 157 acres; 74% clearcut, 21% selection, 4% no-harvest, 1% roadside logging.  McDonald Creek (HUM: T9N R1E Sec.4, 8, 9, 16; T10N R1E Sec.33).  Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 65%, landslide terrain, road failure sites, 9 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, adjacent to redwood national park, oversized units, herbicides, coho watershed, 3 spotted owls within 1.3mi, osprey nest adjacent to haul road, bald eagle nest within .9 mi, southern torrent salamander adjacent to unit A, coastal tailed frog adjacent to unit E, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 10/04/14. VIEW

This THP is about 9 miles NE of Trinidad, CA near Big Lagoon and adjacent to Redwood National Park (units A and B).  Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a clearcut feller buncher, shovel and cable logging operation in redwood, Douglas fir, grand fir, western hemlock and Sitka spruce forests at an elevation of 360 to 1,900 feet.  There is an unstable area in the northern portion of unit E, and 7 landslide terrain sites including shallow rapid landslides and debris slides in unit B. There are also misc road failure sites related to crossings including fill failures, cut bank failures, a diverted watercourse and a debris slide near a road in the THP area.  Over 2,400 feet of seasonal road, and 4,600 feet of temporary road is planned.  9 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, culvert repair/replacement and road bed stabilization.  An osprey nest is located within .25 mi of the BL1300 haul road, and there are spotted owl nesting territories within .25 mi of units D and E, and within .5 mi of units A,B and C. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
