Mendocino Redwood Company to log on steep and unstable slopes NE of Navarro, CA.

THP 1-14-089 MEN (Big Gulp THP) Mendocino Redwood Company, 835 acres; 53% transition, 29% seed tree, 12% variable retention, 5% selection logging.  Little N. Fork Navarro River (MD: T16N R15W Sec.25, 26, 34, 35, 36).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 75%, steep roads, landslide terrain, 20 road failure sites, 40 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, 7 spotted owls within 1.3mi, trees up to  40" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 09/28/14. VIEW

This THP is 14 miles NW of Ukiah, CA and about 3 miles NE of Navarro, CA at an elevation of 400 to 1,280 feet.  The THP area drains into the North Fork of the Navarro River which is listed as impaired for sediment and temperature.  Mendocino Redwood Company is planning a tractor and cable logging operation in redwood and Douglas fir forests.  18,835 feet of seasonal road is proposed including construction and re-construction at 20 locations over unstable soils, fill failures, cut bank failures, debris slides, wet areas and across areas of road bed slumping.  Several segments of roads are proposed on steep slopes over 65% grade, and 3 landings are proposed for use within a class I watercourse.  40 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning, culvert repair/replacement and road bed stabilization. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
