Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log near the Sacramento River Canyon

THP 2-14-069 SHA (Mosquito THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 279 Acres; 99% clearcut, 1% roadside logging.  Upper Dog Creek, Mosquito Creek, Lower Dog Creek (MD: T35N R6W Sec.11; T36N R5W Sec.19, 20, 29; T36N R6W Sec.25).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 70%, dog creek roadless area, herbicides, 2 spotted owls within 1.3 mi, 1 osprey territory within 1.5 mi, 3 foothill yellow legged frog sightings, tailed frog sightings, blushing wild buckwheat, redwood lily, trees up to 36" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 10/29/14. VIEW

This THP is about 5 miles NW of Lakehead, CA and north and west of Lake Shasta and I-5 at an elevation of 1,800 to 4,200 feet.  Section 11 is adjacent to Dog Creek Roadless Area. Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a clearcut tractor and cable logging operation in Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, sugar pine and white fir forests.  Tractors are proposed for use inside an area designated for cable logging within unit 29A.  Three 1994 sightings of foothill yellow legged frogs were reported within .1 mi, .2 mi and 1 mi of the THP area.  There is an osprey territory within 1.5 mi of the THP area in section 27, and tailed frogs were spotted at Sweetbriar Creek nearby.  Blushing wild buckwheat was found in unit 25B along a road, and redwood lily was found along a haul road. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
