Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut near Lake Shasta

THP 2-14-072 SHA (Gilman THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 244 acres; 79% clearcut, 12% shelterwood, 8% rehab, 2% roadside logging.  Upper Salt Creek, Hirz Creek (MD: T35N R4W Sec.11, 13, 14, 15).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 65%, landslide terrain, 8 road drainage work sites, herbicides, oversized units, bald eagle and western pond turtle sighting within 1 mi, northern clarkia, slender false lupine, trees over 32" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 11/06/14. VIEW

This THP is about 20 miles north of Redding, CA and 4 miles east of Lakehead and I-5 near Lake Shasta.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation in Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, incense cedar and sugar pine forests at an elevation of 1,300 to 2,600 feet.  There are 6 unstable areas (small landslide areas) in units 14A, 14C, 14B,1, and 11A.1.  Operations are proposed on steep slopes over 50% grade that do not flatten before reaching a class III watercourse In unit 14A, and small portions of 2 landings are proposed for use inside a class II watercourse in unit 14A.  8 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert repair and replacement.  A bald eagle nest is located at Hirz Bay on Lake Shasta 1 mi from the THP area, and there was a 2003 sighting of a western pond turtle reported 1 mile south of unit 13A.  Northern clarkia was found along road cuts in units 11C, 11E and 15A, and slender false lupine was found in units 11A and 15A. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
