Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log in high elevation large tree and rare plant habitat.

THP 2-14-073 TRI (Whiskey Bill THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 500 Acres; 87% clearcut, 9% no-harvest, 5% selection, misc roadside logging.  Crow Creek, Baker Creek (MD: T37N R6W Sec.1; T38N R5W Sec.31; T38N R6W Sec.25, 35).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 65%, unstable area, impaired 303.d watershed, wet areas, 8 oversized units, large tree logging, herbicides, 4 cascade frog sightings, 10 sensitive plant species, trees up to 40" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 11/06/14. VIEW

This THP is about 9 miles SW of Castella, CA and Castle Craigs State Park near Tamarack Lake and the East Fork of the Trinity River at an elevation of 4,000 to 6,200 feet.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor based logging operation in Douglas fir, white fir, incense cedar, sugar pine, ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine and western white pine forests.  According to the THP, there are large trees up to 200 years old and up to 40" dbh.  There is a small unstable area along the northern boundary of unit 31A in section 31.  SPI wants to use 6 short existing road segments within class I and class II watercourses, 2 landings inside a class II watercourse, and 1 landing inside a class III watercourse.  They also want to use tractors on slopes over 50% grade with a high erosion hazard in unit 31A.  There were 4 cascade frog sightings within unit 1A; 1,200 feet west of unit 1E, 1,250 feet south of unit 31D, and 1,100 feet SE of unit 31C.  A fisher was reported in section 12 in 1997.  This THP contains an abundance (10 species) of rare and sensitive plant species including; Klamath manzanita was found in units 1C, 35C, 35E, California lady’s slipper was found in units 35A, California pitcher plant was found in units 1A, 1B, 1E, 31D, 35B, Oregon fireweed was found in unit 31C, Congdon’s buckwheat was found in units 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 25A, 31A, 31B, 31C, 35D, ternate buckwheat was found near unit 1E, redwood lily was found in units 25H, 35B, San Bernardino grass of Parnassus was found in units 1A, 1B, 31D, thread leaf beardtounge was found in units 1A, 1B, 1C, 1E, 25A, 25H, Scott Mountain phacelia was found in units 1C, 1E and 31E and yellow brodiaea was found in unit 1E. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
