Mendocino Redwood Company to log on steep and unstable slopes near the Albion River


THP 1-14-114 MEN (Tom Bell Complex THP) Mendocino Redwood Company, 710 acres; 37% group selection, 32% transition, 26% variable retention, 5% seed tree logging.  Middle Albion River, South Fork Albion River (MD: T16N R16W Sec.4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 23, 26).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 70%, landslide terrain, road failure sites, 56 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, 8 spotted owls within .7 mi, Oregon gold thread, trees up to 48" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 12/04/14. VIEW

This THP is a few miles west of Comptche, CA and inland on the Mendocino coast at an elevation of 100 to 900 feet.  The THP area flows into the Albion River which is listed as impaired for sediment and temperature.  Mendocino Redwood Company is planning a tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood and Douglas fir forests.  There are 7 road failure sites including fill failures, bank sloughing and cut bank failures.  56 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, crossing restoration and culvert repair/replacement.  Oregon gold thread was found within a class I watercourse.  For spotted owl site MD236; the THP will reduce foraging habitat by 5 acres within .7 mi, for spotted owl site MD065; the THP will reduce foraging habitat by 14 acres within .7 mi, for spotted owl site MD562; the THP will reduce foraging habitat by 46 acres within .7 mi, for spotted owl site MD439; the THP will reduce nesting/roosting habitat by 2 acres within .7 mi, and foraging habitat by 55 acres within .7 mi.  This THP is a few miles north of Mendocino Redwood Company’s Upper Barton THP 1-14-115 MEN. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
