Green Diamond Resource Company to clearcut log SE of Trinidad, CA.

THP 1-14-139 HUM (The Little River 15 THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 159.5 acres; 69% clearcut, 13% commercial thin, 9% selection, 9% no-harvest logging.  Lower South Fork, Headwaters Little River (HUM: T7N R1E Sec.1; T7N R2E Sec.3, 4, 7, 8, 16, 17; T8N R2E Sec.17, 32, 34).  Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 65%, landslide terrain, 4 road drainage work sites, oversized units, herbicides, coho watershed, 12 spotted owls within 1.3 mi, coastal tailed frogs and southern torrent salamanders in unit B, peregrine falcon within 1.2 mi, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 01/26/15. VIEW

This THP is about 8 miles SE of Trinidad, CA and about 9 miles NE of Arcata, CA at an elevation of 450 to 2,000 feet.  Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in Douglas fir and redwood forests.  There is shallow rapid landslide terrain upslope from a class II watercourse in unit D, and 2 shallow rapid landslides upslope from a class II watercourse along the SW portion of unit F.  2, 540 feet of temporary road is proposed, and 9,130 feet of seasonal road is proposed.  A road will be re-constructed along a ridge and near a class II wet area in unit F.  Four road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert repair/replacement.  There is a spotted owl nesting territory within .25 mi of unit C. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
