Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut near Hayfork, CA

THP 2-15-015 TRI (2D Glades THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 344 acres; 99% clearcut, 1% roadside logging.  Duncan Creek, Potato Creek (MD: T31N, R10W, Sec 8,17,18,20,29).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes over 65%, impaired 303.d watershed, oversized units, wells mountain roadless area, herbicides, coho watershed, 3 spotted owls within 1.3mi, Clustered lady's slipper, Howell's lewisia, scattered large trees. This THP is about 7 - 8 miles east of Hayfork, CA and Highway 3 at an elevation of 3,280 to 5,020 feet.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a clearcut tractor and cable logging operation in Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, white fir, sugar pine and incense cedar forests.  The THP area flows into the South Fork of the Trinity River which is listed as impaired for sediment/siltation and temperature and contains chinook, coho salmon and steelhead.  SPI is planning to use tractors in units designated for cable logging, and use tractors on slopes up to 60% grade with a high erosion hazard to construct fire breaks.  The Wells Mountain roadless area is located in adjacent sections 7, 13 and 19.  Clustered lady's slipper was found in unit 2039, and Howell's lewisia was found in section 3. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
