Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log up against the Trinity Alps Wilderness.

THP 2-15-021 TRI (Yesmon THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 195 acres; 75% clearcut, 16% selection, 9% seed tree logging.  Stoney Creek, Trinity Alps Creek (MD: T35N, R9W, Sec 15, 21, 27).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes over 65%, 17 road drainage work sites, unstable areas, impaired 303.d watershed, oversized units, herbicides, trinity alps wilderness nearby, stoney ridge trail, elk gulch trail, 2 spotted owls within 1.3 mi, bald eagle and osprey sightings nearby, 7 sensitive plant species, trees up to 50" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 05/24/15. VIEW

This THP is about 10 miles NE of Weaverville, CA and a few miles west of Trinity Lake near the Bridge Camp Trailhead that leads into the Trinity Alps Wilderness.  Unit 1385 in section 15 is adjacent to the Trinity Alps Wilderness boundary, and the THP area contains 2 trails; the Stoney Ridge Trail in section 15 (unit 1385), and the Elk Gulch Trail in section 21 (units 1390 and 560).  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor logging operation in Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, incense cedar, white fir and sugar pine forests at an elevation of 2,400 to 5,200 feet.  There are unstable areas in sections 15, 21 and 27, and SPI wants to build a new temporary road crossing at the Stuart Fork stream to access their landlocked lands in section 27.  Two skid trails are proposed for use inside a class II (mid sized) watercourse, 3 landings are proposed for use inside a class II watercourse, and a landing is proposed for use inside a class III (intermittent) watercourse.  They also want to use tractors on steep slopes over 65% grade within units 565 and 3527.  17 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert repair/replacement.  California pitcher plant was found in unit 560, Congdon’s buckwheat was found on the edge of unit 1385, Engelmann’s desert parsley was found on the edge of unit 1385, slender false lupine was found in units 575, 1390, 550, 565, 560 and 1288, California’s lady slipper was found in unit 560, Oregon fireweed was found in unit 560, and Cascade grass of parnassus was found in sections 15,16 and 22.
