Sierra Pacific Industries planning to clearcut along the Upper Trinity River.

THP 2-15-025 TRI (Ramblin THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 197 acres; 95% clearcut, 5% selection logging.  Rainshorn Creek, Sherer Creek (MD: T39N R6W Sec.19; T39N R7W Sec.24, 25).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes over 65%, oversized units, herbicides, Impaired 303.d watershed, 1 spotted owl within 1.3 mi, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 06/08/15. VIEW

This THP is 8 miles north of Coffee Creek and Trinity Lake, and a few miles east of Highway 3 towards the Scott Mountain summit.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a clearcut tractor based logging operation in Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, white fir, sugar pine, incense cedar and knob cone pine forest at an elevation of 4,000 to 5,840 feet. The THP area flows into the Upper Trinity River which is listed as impaired for sediment  and temperature.  SPI is planning to use ground based equipment on existing skid trails with steep slopes over 65% grade in units 2401, 2407 and 2437; and use ground based equipment on slopes exceeding 50% grade with a high erosion hazard in units 2407 and 2437.  They also want to use ground based equipment on slopes exceeding 50% grade that do not flatten before reaching a watercourse in units 2401 and 2397, and use 400 feet of existing road inside a class II (mid sized) spring. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
