Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log north of Bieber and Lookout.

THP 2-15-024 MOD (McKay THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 714 acres; 73% clearcut, 27% fuel break, 1% roadside logging.  Upper Mud Lake, Webb Flat Reservoir, Spaulding Reservoir, Washington Creek, Damons Butte (MD: T41N R7E Sec.4; T42N R7E Sec.2, 3, 10, 11, 15, 16, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 33).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, slopes up to 40%, 26 road drainage work sites, oversized units, herbicides, osprey within 750 feet, goshawk nest within .9 mi, bald eagle territory within 1 mi, greater sandhill cranes within .6 mi, 4 sensitive plant species, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 06/04/15. VIEW

This THP is 15 miles north of Lookout, CA and 3 miles south of Highway 139 near the California/Oregon border in Modoc County.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor based logging operation in ponderosa pine, incense cedar, and white fir forests at an elevation of 4,600 to 5,360 feet.  7,500 feet of new seasonal road is proposed, and 26 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, and culvert repair/replacement.  There are several small springs within unit 25A in the NE corner of section 25.  A bald eagle nesting territory lies within 1 mi of the THP area between Spaulding and Beeler Reservoirs, and a goshawk territory and nest are located .9 mi north of the THP area in section 36.  Greater sandhill cranes were spotted on the east side of Spaulding Reservoir .6 mi from the THP area. Long haired stared tulip was found on the edge of unit 25B, Castlegar Hawthorne was found west and downstream of unit 26A, and Silvery False Lupine was found in unit FB1 and 10A. Slender Orcutt Grass was also found along the western boundary of unit 21A, near the 91 road and along the eastern boundary of unit 15A. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
