Green Diamond Resource Company to clearcut on steep and unstable slopes near Big Lagoon, CA.

THP 1-15-101 HUM (Lower Maple Creek THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 121 acres; 71% clearcut, 19% no-harvest, 9% selection, 1% roadside logging. Maple Creek, Pitcher Creek (HUM: T9N R1E Sec.19, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33).  Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, landslide terrain, oversized units, 3 road drainage work sites, herbicides, coho watershed, 6 spotted owls within 1.3 mi, 3 osprey nests within .25 mi of haul roads, Sonoma tree vole and red legged frog sightings near unit E, bald eagle nest within 1.6 mi, trees up to 60" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 10/31/15. VIEW

This THP is a few miles SE of Big Lagoon and about 5 miles NE of Trinidad, CA and Highway 101 at an elevation of 40 to 720 feet.  Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, grand fir, western hemlock and redwood forests.  The THP area flows into Maple Creek which contains coho, chinook, steelhead and coastal cutthroat trout.  There are 8 unstable areas within units B, C and E, including 5 shallow rapid landslide terrain sites, and 3 deep seated landslide terrain sites.  Three road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert repair/replacement.  There is an osprey nest within .25 mi of the mainline LP Mill Road, and 2 osprey nests within .25 mi of the BL2000 Road.  A bald eagle nest is located 1.6 miles north of the THP area, and there are spotted owl nesting territories within .25 mi of units A, B and C. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
