Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log south of Trinity Lake.

THP 2-15-063 TRI (Smurfer THP) Sierra Pacific Industries; 310 acres; 87% clearcut, 6% rehab, 5% selection, 2% roadside logging.  Buckeye Creek, Mooney Gulch (MD: T34N R8W Sec.29; T34N R9W Sec.11, 13, 14).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 70%, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, oversized units, coho watershed, 4 spotted owls within 1.3 mi, 2 bald eagle nest sites within 1 mi, 6 sensitive plant species, trees up to 24" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 11/10/15. VIEW

This THP is about 7 miles NE of Weaverville, CA and 3 miles west of Lake Trinity Dam at an elevation of 2,680 to 3,280 feet.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor based logging operation on steep slopes in Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, white fir, sugar pine and incense cedar forests.  Tractors are proposed for use on slopes over 65% in units 4825, 4826, 4829 and 4858, and on class III (intermittent) temporary crossings during the winter period.  Twelve road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert repair/replacement.  There are Bald eagle nest sites in sections 9 and 29.  Slender false lupine was found in unit 4874; tauschia glacua was found in units 4825, 4829, 4869, 4872 and 4874; Clustered lady's slipper was found in unit 4029; Siskiyou onion was found in unit 5132B; Klamath mountain catchfly was found in units 4858 and 4874; and English peak greenbrier was found in unit 4872. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
