Fruit Growers Supply Company to log near the CA/OR border.

THP 2-15-088 SIS (Home Boy THP) Fruit Growers Supply Company, 835 acres; 62% selection, 37% clearcut, 1% no-harvest logging.  Soda Springs, West Fork Cottonwood Creek (MD: T47N R7W Sec.3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10; T48N R7W Sec.33, 34).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes over 65%, unstable area, 42 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, 5 spotted owls within 1.3 mi, fisher sightings nearby, trees average 105 years old.  Estimated public comment deadline: 01/08/16. VIEW

This THP is a few miles SW of Hilt, CA and Interstate 5 near the California/Oregon border.  Fruit Growers Supply Company is planning a tractor based logging operation in Douglas fir, white fir, ponderosa pine, sugar pine and incense cedar forests.  The THP area drains into the Klamath River which is listed as an impaired watershed and contains coho, chinook salmon and steelhead.  Fruit Growers Supply Company is planning to use ground based equipment on steep slopes over 65% grade for tractor logging on 2 acres, and use ground based equipment on an existing skid trail over 65% grade that does not flatten before reaching a watercourse.  Road construction is proposed within 150 feet of a class I watercourse, and 3 existing landings are proposed for use inside a watercourse.  There are 42 road drainage sites planned for work including rocking, dip construction, culvert repair/replacement and re-construction of washed out crossings.  For spotted owl nesting territory SK360: this THP will remove 40 acres of foraging habitat with 1.3 mi; for spotted owl nesting territory SK467; this THP will remove 12 acres of foraging habitat within 1.3 mi. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
