Fruit Growers Supply Company to log near Grass Lake in Siskiyou County.

THP 2-15-092 SIS (Bear Bones THP) Fruit Growers Supply Company, 690 acres; 66% shelterwood, 31% clearcut, 3% special logging.  Wallow Creek, Smith Spring (MD: T44N R3W Sec.3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10; T45N R3W Sec.33, 34).  Winter operations, slopes up to 40%, low erosion hazard, impaired 303.d watershed, seasonal meadows, wet areas, herbicides, coho watershed, 2 spotted owls within 2 mi, 5 goshawk territories within 2 mi, bald eagle nest, sandhill crane sightings nearby, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 01/08/16. VIEW

This THP is about 22 miles east of Yreka, CA and 18 miles north of Weed, CA near Grass Lake off Highway 97 at an elevation of 5,400 to 6,200 feet.  Fruit Growers Supply Company is planning a shelterwood (overstory removal) and clearcut tractor based logging operation in white fir, ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, incense cedar, sugar pine and red fir forests.  Heavy equipment is proposed for use inside seasonal wet areas and watercourses for meadow restoration.  There are 22 acres of aspen, meadow, and wet meadow restoration where encroaching conifers will be cut within 100 feet.  A bald eagle nest is located at nearby Grass Lake within 2 mi inside section 21, and sandhill cranes have been spotted at Grass Lake. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
