Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut by Chester, CA and Lake Almanor.

THP 2-15-079 PLU (Benner Creek THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 472 acres; 86% clearcut, 14% fuelbreak, misc roadside logging. Benner Creek (MD: T29N R6E Sec.13, 14, 23, 24, 25; T29N R7E Sec.19, 29, 30, 31).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, slopes up to 50%, 10 road drainage work sites, herbicides, 4 CA spotted owls within 1.3 mi, bald eagle nest within .5 mi, goshawk nest within 450 ft, sandhill crane sighting within 1 mi, great gray owl sightings within 1.5 mi, sandhill crane and cascade frog sightings within 1 mi, historic red fox sightings, Rocky Mountain chickweed, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 12/23/15. VIEW

This THP is .5 mi north of Chester, CA and Lake Almoner at an elevation of 4,560 to 5,320 feet.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor based logging operation in ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, white fir and incense cedar forests. 10 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert repair/replacement.  Sierra Nevada red fox sightings have been reported .5 mi south of the THP area in section 6, and 1.5 miles north of the THP area in section 12.  A goshawk nest site is located within 450 feet of the proposed fuel break, and within 1,250 feet of unit 6.  A bald eagle nest is also located .5 mi south of the THP area at the junction of Warner Valley and Juniper Lake Roads.  There have been great gray owl sightings in section 32, and 1.5 mi east of the THP area. Cascade frog sightings were reported 1 mi SSE of the THP area near the North Fork of the Feather River, and greater sandhill crane sightings were reported 1 mi ENE of the THP area near Lake Almanor.  Rocky Mountain Chickweed was found along the banks of Benner Creek.  There are 4 CA spotted owl nesting territories within 2.5 mi, including 1 territory that is located within 500 feet of the THP area in section 30. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
