Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log near Maple Grove and Highway 36.

THP 1-15-008 HUM (Swish THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 359 acres; 86% clearcut, 14% selection logging.  Root Creek, Lower Larabee Creek, Swans Flat (HUM: T1N R3E Sec.17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes over 65%, 3 unstable areas, 10 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, wet area, oversized units, herbicides, coho watershed, 3 spotted owls within 1.3 mi, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 03/20/15. VIEW

This THP is in the interior coast range a few miles south of Maple Grove off Highway 36 near Swains Flat.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood and Douglas fir forests at an elevation of 680 to 2,480 feet. The THP area flows into the Van Duzen River which is listed as impaired for temperature, sediment and siltation.  There are 3 unstable areas in units 21I, 21H and 27N.  SPI wants to use ground based equipment on slopes up to 65% grade in areas designated for cable logging, and use tractors inside cable units on slopes up to 65% grade to construct fire lines. 10 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert repair and replacement. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.

THP 1-15-007 MEN (Up East 2014 THP) Coastal Ridges LLC, 389 acres; 78% transition, 12% no-harvest, 11% group selection logging.  East Branch North Fork Big River (MD: T17N R14W Sec.5, 6, 7, 18; T17N R15W Sec.13).  Wet weather operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 85%, landslide terrain, 9 road failure sites, 29 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, 7 spotted owls within 1.3 mi, peregrine falcon sightings nearby, trees up to 24" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 03/19/15. VIEW

This THP is about 8 miles SW of Willits, CA and a few miles SE of Highway 20 at an elevation of 640 to 1,960 feet. Coastal Ridges LLC is planning a tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood and Douglas fir forests.  The THP area flows down the East Branch of the North Fork of the Big River which is listed as impaired for sediment and temperature.  There are 9 road failure sites including multiple cutbank and fill failures on seasonal roads, and several seasonal roads that cross above and below unstable areas.  Coastal Ridges LLC wants to use ground based equipment on steep slopes exceeding 65% grade within designated cable units, and use ground based equipment on slopes over 65% grade, and on slopes over 50% grade with a high erosion hazard.  They also want to use ground based equipment on unstable slopes, and use 4 segments of seasonal haul road within class II watercourses.  29 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction and culvert repair and replacement. More information is available on the THP Tracking Center website.
