Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log near Nevada City and the South Fork of the Yuba River.

THP 2-16-085 NEV (Wash THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 189 acres; 35% clearcut, 31% commercial thin, 21% sanitation salvage, 13% no-harvest logging.  Rock Creek, Humbug Creek, Spring Creek (MD: T17N R9E Sec.23).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 70%, 9 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, CA spotted owl, goshawk, CA red legged frog, butte county fritillary, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 01/06/17. VIEW

This THP is about 5 miles NE of Nevada City, CA and about 3 miles north of Highway 20 near the South Fork of the Yuba River at an elevation of 3,000 to 3,800 feet.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a tractor based logging operation in ponderosa pine, sugar pine, white fir, incense cedar and Douglas fir forests. Nine road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement.  A northern goshawk territory is located within .15 miles of the THP area in section 13, a CA spotted owl nesting territory is located within .11 miles of the THP area in section 14, a CA spotted owl nesting territory is located within .27 miles of the THP area in section 27, and a CA spotted owl nesting territory is located within 2.5 miles of the THP area in section 3.  There was also a report of a CA red legged frog within 1 mile of the THP area in 2007, and Butte county fritillary was reported within .25 miles of the THP area.
