Green Diamond Resource Company to clearcut log trees up to 60” dbh east of Eureka, CA.

THP 1-17-035 HUM (FH 1000 THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 88 acres; 61% clearcut, 34% selection, 2% no-harvest, 2% roadside logging.  Upper Jacoby Creek (HUM: T5N R2E Sec.29).  Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 80%, landslide terrain, oversized units, 4 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, trees up to 60" dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 05/25/17. VIEW

This THP is about 8 miles east of Eureka, CA and a few miles NE of Kneeland, CA at an elevation of 1,070 to 2,050 feet.  Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in Douglas fir, redwood, grand fir and western hemlock forests (unit A has trees up to 40" dbh, and unit B has trees up to 60" dbh).  The THP area flows into the Jacoby Creek watershed which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment, temperature and turbidity.  There are 11 landslide terrain sites in unit B; including 8 shallow rapid landslides, and 3 deep seated landslides mostly related to legacy roads and skid trails.  Four road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning, and culvert repair/replacement.  There is a bald eagle territory 2.8 miles NE of the THP area, and spotted owl nesting territories within .25 miles of unit B, and within .5 miles of unit A.
