Mendocino Redwood Company to log NE of Philo, CA.

THP 1-17-074 MEN (West Branch THP) Mendocino Redwood Company, 276 acres; 49% transition, 27% variable retention, 24% group selection logging.  Upper S. Branch Navarro River, North Fork Indian Creek (MD: T15N R14W Sec.25, 26, 27, 28, 33, 34, 35).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 85%, landslide terrain, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, white flowered rein orchid, trees up to 34” dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 08/27/17. VIEW

This THP is about 10 miles west of Ukiah, CA and about 4 miles NE of Philo, CA at an elevation of 800 to 2,400 feet.  Mendocino Redwood Company is planning a tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood and Douglas fir forests.  The THP area flows into the Navarro River which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment and temperature.  There are unstable areas in sections 25 and 34, and miscellaneous cut bank and fill failures along several road ways.  Mendocino Redwood Company is planning to use ground based equipment in areas designated for cable logging.  16 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning, culvert repair/replacement and restoration of washed out crossings.  White flowered rein orchid was found near Indian Creek .25 miles from the THP area.  There are 5 spotted owl nesting territories within .7 miles of the THP area.
