Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log east of Lassen National Park.

THP 2-17-079 LAS (Long Halls THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 393 acres; 100% clearcut logging. Lower Butte Creek (MD: T33N R7E Sec.5, 6, 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, 20).  Winter operations, low erosion hazard, slopes up to 40%, herbicides, greater sandhill crane, Susanville milk vetch, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 01/26/18. VIEW

This THP is about 23 miles SE of Burney, CA and about 10 miles NE of Old Station, CA at an elevation of 5,620 to 6,120 feet.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a clearcut tractor based logging operation in white fir, ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, and incense cedar forests.  Temporary “jump roads” are proposed for construction under 500 feet in length without pre-designation to connect haul roads with landings, and winter operations are proposed for roads, landings and crossings.  In 2000, a pair of greater sandhill cranes were reported near Halls Flat 2 miles west of the THP Area.  Susanville milk vetch was found inside units 6, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20.
