Green Diamond Resource Company to clearcut log trees up to 50" dbh NE of Trinidad, CA.

THP 1-18-042 HUM (Gray Diamond THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 95.5 acres; 80% clearcut, 18% selection, 2% no-harvest logging. McDonald Creek, Pitcher Creek (HUM: T8N R1W Sec.1; T9N R1E Sec.8, 9, 10, 16, 17; HUM: T9N R1W Sec.36).  Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 70%, landslide terrain, road failure sites, 4 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, marbled murrelet, osprey, great blue heron, sharp shinned hawk, southern torrent salamander, coastal tailed frog, trees up to 50” dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 05/29/18. VIEW

This THP is 3.5 miles NE of Trinidad, CA, and about a mile east of Highway 101 near Big Lagoon, CA at an elevation of 600 to 1,400 feet. Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in Douglas fir, redwood and western hemlock forests.  There are 2 shallow rapid landslide terrain sites, and several roads with minor cut bank and fill failures.  A bald eagle nest is located .7 miles west of unit A, and osprey nests are located within .25 miles of the LP Mill Road, and along the BL1000 Road. Southern torrent salamanders and coastal tailed frogs were reported within .5 miles of units A and B.  There is potential marbled murrelet habitat on Humboldt Redwoods State Park lands within .25 miles of the LP Mill Road.  In 2007, a sharp shinned hawk was reported 1.9 miles NE of unit C, and there is a great blue heron rockery 1.7 miles south of unit A.  Spotted owl nesting territories are located within .5 miles of unit B, and within .25 miles of unit A.
