This THP is about 8 miles SE of Eureka, CA and a few miles south of Kneeland, CA at an elevation of 1,500 to 2,200 feet. Humboldt Redwood Company is planning a tractor based logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood, Douglas fir and western red cedar forests. The THP area flows into Freshwater Creek which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment and siltation. There are a series of small landslides along Freshwater Creek, a large landslide complex between units 1 and 2, and a small stream side landslide along a class II (mid sized) watercourse within unit 2. There are also several road failure sites including a small slump along the edge of a road, a road partially buried by a dormant young landslide, and a road downstream of the toe of a large landslide between units 1 and 2. Humboldt Redwood Company is planning to use ground based equipment within an unstable area on the X65.5051 Road. 43 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning, culvert repair/replacement and restoration of washed out crossings. Within 1.3 miles of the THP area are 4 spotted owl nesting territories.
