Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log NW of Big Bend, CA.

THP 2-18-028 SHA (Straw Gun THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 105 acres; 66% clearcut, 31% selection, 3% roadside logging. Stump Creek (MD: T37N R1E Sec.19, 30; T37N R1W Sec.24).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 75%, unstable areas, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, trees up to 30” dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 07/22/18. VIEW

This THP is a few miles NW of Big Bend, CA and about a dozen miles NW of Burney, CA and Highway 299 at an elevation of 2,500 to 2,800 feet. Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable soils (there are 2 small areas of instability within unit 19) in Douglas fir, white fir, incense cedar, ponderosa pine and sugar pine forests.  The THP area flows into the Pit River which is listed as an impaired watershed for temperature, nutrients and dissolved oxygen.  There is 1 spotted owl nesting territory within 1.3 miles of the THP area.

  1. In addition, the THP will impact area owners whose drinking water source is Baker Creek. SPI failed to notify these owners, and ignores their water use in the application.
