Green Diamond Resource Company to clearcut log south of the Highway 299 coast range summit.

THP 1-18-084 HUM (Cuttoff Road THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 438 acres; 48% clearcut, 36% commercial thin, 14% selection, 2% no-harvest, misc roadside logging. Long Prairie Creek, Pollock Creek, Upper Cannon Creek, Lupton Creek, Noisy Creek (HUM: T6N R3E Sec.7, 8, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 28, 29).  Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 70%, oversized units, landslide terrain, road failure sites, 12 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, sharp shinned hawk, trees up to 48” dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 09/23/18. This THP is about 9 miles east of Arcata, CA, and a few miles south of the Highway 299 coast range summit at an elevation of 1,200 to 2,600 feet. Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a clearcut and commercial thinning tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in Douglas fir, western hemlock, western red cedar forests. The THP area flows into the Redwood Creek and the Mad River watersheds which are listed as impaired watersheds for sediment and temperature. There are 5 landslide terrain sites in the THP area including; 2 unstable areas in unit B, 1 unstable area in unit C, 1 unstable area in unit E, 1 unstable area in unit J, and 1 road failure site along the CP 1000 Road. In 2011 and 2016, a sharp shinned hawk was reported within 200 feet of unit D, and a pair of red tailed hawks were reported near a nest in unit F.  There are spotted owl nesting territories within .25 miles of units C, E, and I, and spotted owl nesting territories within .5 miles of units B, D and J.
