THP 1-18-161 HUM (JC Thin THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 338 acres; 84% commercial thin, 16% no-harvest logging. Lower Jacoby Creek, Upper Jacoby Creek (HUM: T5N R1E Sec 10, 11, 14, 15, 23). Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, landslide terrain, 9 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, osprey, bald eagle, peregrine falcon, Cooper’s hawk, northern red legged frog, southern torrent salamander, trees up to 32” dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 01/09/19. This THP is about 4 miles NE of Eureka, CA and a couple miles east of Highway 101 near Jacoby Creek at an elevation of 200 to 800 feet.  Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a mostly commercial thinning tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes (landslide terrain in unit C) in redwood, Douglas fir, western hemlock and Sitka spruce forests. The THP area flows into Jacoby Creek which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment. Nine road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement. There are 11 osprey nests in the THP area including; 6 osprey nests within .25 miles of unit A and seasonal roads, and 5 nests within .25 miles of unit B and seasonal roads. A bald eagle nest is located .9 miles west of the THP area, a peregrine falcon nesting territory is located within 1 mile of the THP area, and in 2003, a Cooper’s hawk was reported to be .78 miles SW of unit A. Southern torrent salamanders are known to occur in or adjacent to unit A, and in 1996, a northern red legged frog was reported within or adjacent to unit B.  There are 4 spotted owl nesting territories within 1.3 miles of the THP area.
