Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log close to the rarely seen Sierra Nevada Red Fox by Lassen National Volcanic Park and the Caribou Wilderness Area.

THP 2-18-137 LAS (Slope THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 1,283 acres; 79% clearcut, 20% fuel break, 1% roadside logging. Middle Butte Creek, (MD: T32N R6E Sec 11, 12, 13, 14, 23, 24, 25 T32N R7E Sec 7, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 28, 29, 30).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, herbicides, oversized units, Highway 44, bald eagle, northern goshawk, Sierra Nevada Red Fox, 3 sensitive plant species, scattered large trees. This THP is about 9 miles SE of Old Station, CA and about 3 miles NE of Lassen National Volcanic Park and the Caribou Wilderness Area.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor based logging operation in ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, white fir, sugar pine and incense cedar forests.  This THP is just NE of one of two populations of Sierra Nevada red foxes in California, and there are 9 historic sightings ranging from Pine Creek Valley south to Lassen National Park (a 2001 sighting was 1.1 miles south of the THP area).  There are also historic bald eagle and goshawk nests at Poison Lake in section 9.  Susanville milkvetch was found in fuelbreak A, and in unit 231, Sucksdorf’s milkvetch was found in unit 220U, and north of unit 209, and Blushing wild buckwheat was found in units 204 and 208.
