Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log by Jenkinson Lake, SE of Pollock Pines, CA.

THP 4-18-184 ELD (Uber THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 596 acres; 54% clearcut, 26% fuel break, 11% commercial thin, 4% selection, 4% no-harvest, 2% sanitation salvage logging.  Jenkinson Lake, Lower Sly Park Creek, North Sly Park Creek, Plum Creek, Snow Creek (MD: T10N R13E Sec 16 ; T10N R14E Sec 7, 8, 9,15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23 , 24).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 65%, oversized units, 12 road drainage work sites, Jenkinson lake, herbicides, CA spotted owl, bald eagle, northern goshawk, western pond turtle, foothill yellow legged frog, Sierra Nevada yellow legged frog, 3 sensitive plant species, scattered large trees. This THP is about 8 miles SE of Pollock Pines, CA and a few miles south of Highway 50 near Jenkinson Lake (units 5782, 5783, FB01, FB02, FB04 are adjacent), which is a popular camping, fishing, hiking and picnicking area. Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a clearcut and fuel break tractor and cable logging operation in ponderosa pine, sugar pine, Douglas fir, incense cedar and white fir forests at an elevation of 3,800 to 5,900 feet.  12 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement.  A goshawk was reported within 1.9 miles of the THP area, and a bald eagle territory is located within .6 miles of the THP area.  Sierra Nevada yellow legged frogs were reported within 1.5 miles of the THP area in section 11, also in sections 27 & 30, and foothill yellow legged frogs were reported within 1 mile of the THP area, and also in sections 11, 25, 29, 30, 33, 34 and 36. Western pond turtles were reported at Sly Park Creek at the upper portion of Jenkinson Lake within .5 miles of the THP area.  Sierra clarkia was found within units B, C, G, F, K, I, M, L, R and FB6, Pleasant valley mariposa lily was found within unit A and just outside of unit FB6, and Coleman’s piperia was found in units 5877, FB09 and R.  12 CA spotted owl nesting territories are located within 1.3 miles of the THP area.
