This THP is adjacent to the eastern edge of the town of McKinleyville, CA at an elevation of 200 to 800 feet.  Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a mostly commercial thinning tractor and cable logging operation with some clearcutting on steep and unstable slopes (shallow rapid landslide in unit D) in Douglas fir, redwood, Sitka spruce, grand fir, western hemlock and Monterey pine forests.  The THP area flows into the Mad River which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment, turbidity and temperature.  17 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement. In 2012, a Cooper’s hawk was reported 2.5 miles north of unit D, osprey nests were reported 2 miles south of unit H, and a western pond turtle was reported 1.3 miles north of unit D.  There are spotted owl nesting territories within .25 miles of unit D.
