Mendocino Redwood Company to log on steep and unstable slopes SE of Rockport, CA.

THP 1-19-060 MEN (Lower Juan THP) Mendocino Redwood Company, 232 acres; 100% selection logging.  Juan Creek (MD: T21N R17W Sec 3, 4, 5, 6, T22N R17W Sec 32, 33, 34).  Wet weather operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 85%, landslide terrain, road failure sites, 28 road drainage work sites, herbicides, coho watershed, osprey, trees up to 28” dbh. This THP is about 3 miles SE of Rockport, CA, and about 4 miles NE of Westport, CA along the Mendocino coastline at an elevation of 120 to 880 feet.  Mendocino Redwood Company is planning a selection based tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood, Douglas fir, grand fir and western hemlock forests. There are multiple landslide terrain sites in the THP area including; 11 unstable areas in unit C, 2 unstable areas in unit D, 1 unstable area in unit H, and 4 road related cut bank failures. Mendocino Redwood Company is planning to use ground based equipment on existing skid trails on slopes between 50% and 65% grade with a high erosion hazard, and use ground based equipment on existing landings inside watercourse areas.  28 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement.  There is an historic osprey nest located inside unit C, and 5 spotted owl nesting territories within .7 miles of the THP area.
