Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log trees over 48” dbh SE of Redcrest, CA.

THP 1-19-119 HUM (Jets THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 214 acres; 75% clearcut, 22% selection, 2% rehab, 1% roadside logging.  Mill Creek (HUM: T1S R4E Sec 16, 19, 20, 21).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes over 65%, landslide terrain, oversized units, 16 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, oversized units, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, yellow legged frog, 3 sensitive plant species, trees over 48” dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 09/20/19. This THP is about 10 miles SE of Redcrest, CA and Highway 101, and about 4 miles north of the Eel River at an elevation of 960 to 2,460 feet. Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in Douglas fir forests.  The THP area flows into the Eel River which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment/siltation and temperature, and unstable areas are adjacent to units 20A, 20E, 20F, and 21B.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning to use and construct roads, landings and crossings during the winter period.  16 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement.  Oregon fawn lily was reported in unit 20C, redwood lily was reported in units 20A and 20C, and heart leaf twayblade was reported in units 20C, 20D and 21A. There are 4 spotted owl nesting territories within 1.3 miles of the THP area, and yellow legged frogs were observed along Larabee Creek.
