Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut and fuel break log SE of Placerville, CA.

This THP is about 17 miles SE of Placerville, CA, and about 5 miles NE of Pioneer, CA by Highway 88 (Carson Pass Highway) at an elevation of 3,600 to 4,960 feet. Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a fuel break and clearcut logging operation on steep slopes in ponderosa pine, sugar pine, incense cedar, white fir and Douglas fir forests.  The THP area flows into the Mokelumne River which is listed as an impaired watershed for zinc and copper from past mining activities. Sierra Pacific Industries is planning to use roads and landings during the winter period, use ground based equipment in areas designated for cable logging inside unit 4355, and use ground based equipment within watercourse areas inside units 4460 and 4480.  Coleman’s piperia was found inside unit 4355, and Sierra clarkia was found inside units 4247, 4250, 4260, 4493, 4650 and 4651. Foothill yellow legged frogs were reported at Tiger Creek within 1.27 miles of the THP area, and California spotted owl sightings were reported within sections 02, 04, 06, 18, 26, 32 and 33. This THP is just SE of SPI’s recently proposed Schell THP 4-19-010 ELD.
