Green Diamond Resource Company to clearcut log east of Strawberry Rock near Trinidad, CA.

THP 1-19-150 HUM (CR2400/1640 THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 284.60 acres; 56% clearcut, 20% commercial thin, 19% selection, 5% no-harvest, misc roadside logging.  Maple Creek, McDonald Creek (HUM: T8N R1E Sec 7, 8, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22).  Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, landslide terrain, steep slopes up to 70%, steep roads, 6 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, oversized units, strawberry rock, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, osprey, southern torrent salamander, sharp shinned hawk, trees up to 40” dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 11/20/19. This THP is a few miles NE of Trinidad, CA and about a mile east of Strawberry Rock, a popular hiking destination with great views of the Pacific Ocean.  Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a clearcut and commercial thinning tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes (there is a steep headwall swale in unit E) in redwood, Douglas fir, Sitka spruce, shore pine, Bishop pine and Port Orford cedar forests at an elevation of 700 to 1,400 feet.  Construction of a steep segment of temporary road is proposed exceeding 20% grade for 100 feet to access unit A, and construction of 2 segments of temporary road is proposed exceeding 20% grade for 100 feet to access unit H.  Six road drainage sites are proposed for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement.  There are 3 osprey nests within the THP area including; an osprey nest within unit F, and 2 osprey nests within .25 miles of haul roads.  In 2000, a sharp shinned hawk was reported .8 miles north of unit A, and southern torrent salamanders are known to occur immediately adjacent to unit C.  There are 8 spotted owl nesting territories within 1.3 miles of the THP area.
