Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log NW of Eagle Lake and Susanville, CA.

THP 2-19-185 LAS (Pat THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 814 acres; 93% clearcut, 7% roadside logging. Black Hole, Bullard Lake (MD: T34N R10E Sec 7, 8, 17, 18, 19; T34N R9E Sec 2, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 23, 24, 25, 26; T35N R9E Sec 35).  Winter operations, low erosion hazard, slopes up to 50%, 72 road drainage work sites, herbicides, goshawk, 2 sensitive plant species, scattered large trees.  Estimated public comment deadline: 12/18/19. This THP is about 20 miles SE of Bieber, CA, 25 miles NW of Susanville, CA, and about 8 miles NW of Eagle Lake at an elevation of 6,000 to 6,600 feet.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor based logging operation in ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, white fir and incense cedar forests.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning to use and construct roads, landings and crossings during the winter period.  72 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning, and culvert repair/replacement.  In 1999, a northern goshawk was reported .75 miles from the nearest THP unit in section 06.  Hillside Arnica was found adjacent to unit 204, and Liddon’s sedge was found adjacent to units 204, 205, 221, 239 and 271.  There is 1 CA spotted owl nesting territory within 1.3 miles of the THP area.
