This THP is about 3 miles NE of Malakoff Diggings State Park (near the Middle Yuba River) and about 10 miles NE of Nevada City, CA at an elevation of 3,440 to 4,500 feet. Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a clearcut and fuel break tractor based logging operation in Ponderosa pine, sugar pine, white fir, incense cedar and Douglas fir forests. Sierra Pacific Industries is planning to use and construct roads, landings and crossings during the winter period, and use ground based equipment on slopes over 50% with a high erosion hazard in unit 17-705. They also are planning to construct a segment of steep road with 65% slopes in unit 17-802, and use ground based equipment on steep slopes over 65% in units 17-705 and 17-802. 14 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement. In 2019, a northern goshawk was reported within .8 miles of the nearest THP unit in section 15. Six foothill yellow legged frog sightings were reported within .02 miles to 1.6 miles from the nearest THP unit in sections 8, 9, 15, 16 and 20. Five CA spotted owl sightings were reported within .02 to .9 miles from the nearest THP unit in sections 18, 20, 21 and 27.
