Green Diamond Resource Company to clearcut log trees up to 72” dbh NW of the Highway 299 coast range summit.

THP 1-20-067 HUM (Basin East THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 211 acres; 73% clearcut, 22% selection logging, 5% no-harvest logging.  Canyon Creek, Lower South Fork (HUM: T7N R2E, Sec 9, 10, 15, 16, 21).  Wet weather operations, low erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 75%, landslide terrain, oversized units, impaired 303.d watershed, 7 road drainage work sites, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, southern torrent salamander, western pond turtle, trees up to 72” dbh. This THP is about 8 miles NE of Arcata, CA and about 3 miles NW of the Highway 299 coast range summit at an elevation of 800 to 1,880 feet. Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation in redwood, Douglas fir, western hemlock, grand fir and Monterrey pine forests.  The THP area flows into the Mad River which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment, temperature and turbidity. There are 3 unstable areas in the THP area including 2 deep seated landslide terrain sites in unit D, and 1 deep seated landslide terrain site in the SE corner of unit D. Seven road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement. An historic (1993) sighting of a western pond turtle was recorded near unit F, and southern torrent salamanders are known to occur immediately adjacent to unit C. There is a spotted owl nesting territory within .25 miles of unit F.
