Green Diamond Resource Company to clearcut log in close proximity to Eureka, CA.

THP 1-20-074 HUM (Mc Kay R5 THP) Green Diamond Resource Company, 193.60 acres; 77% clearcut, 18% selection, 4% no-harvest, 1% roadside logging. Ryan Slough (HUM: T04N R01E Sec 6; T04N R01W Sec 1, 12; T05N R01W Sec 36).  Wet weather operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 65%, steep roads, impaired 303.d watershed, oversized units, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, osprey, peregrine falcon, trees up to 30” dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 06/14/20. This THP is about a mile SE of Eureka, CA (just south of the Redwood Acres Fairground) at an elevation of 20 to 350 feet. Green Diamond Resource Company is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood, Douglas fir, Sitka spruce and grand fir forests.  The THP area is part of the Freshwater Creek Basin which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment.  There are 3 unstable areas in the THP area including.; 1 deep seated landslide terrain site in unit A, 1 deep seated landslide terrain site in unit B, and 1 shallow rapid landslide terrain site in unit E.  Green Diamond Resource Company is planning to construct a segment of temporary road along the western side of unit A that enters a flood plane and watercourse area, and use a 100 foot segment of steep road along the SE corner of unit C exceeding 20% grade.  1,990 feet of seasonal road, and 6,760 feet of temporary road is planned for construction and re-construction.  There are 2 osprey nests within .25 miles of the THP area including; an osprey nest within .25 miles of the R line road, and an osprey nest within .25 miles of unit A, unit C and the R line road. An historic (2009) peregrine falcon nest is located within .25 miles of units D, F and the R line road. There are spotted owl nesting territories within .25 miles of unit D, and within .5 miles of units C, E and F.
