Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut log SE of Arcata, CA.

THP 1-20-055 HUM (Ventura THP) Sierra Pacific Industries, 273 acres; 75% clearcut, 17% selection, 8% no-harvest, misc roadside logging. Dry Creek, Maple Creek, Upper Cannon Creek (HUM: T5N R3E Sec 8, 9, 16, 17, 18, 21).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes over 65%, landslide terrain, 24 road drainage work sites, oversized units, 303.d impaired watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, bald eagle, osprey, 4 sensitive plant species, scattered large trees. This THP is about 10 miles SE of Arcata, CA and about 5 miles SE of Korbel, CA at an elevation of 1,400 to 3,000 feet.  Sierra Pacific Industries is planning a mostly clearcut tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in Douglas fir and redwood forests. The THP area flows into the Mad River watershed which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment/siltation, turbidity and temperature.  Multiple landslide terrain sites are located within the THP area including; unstable areas in units 21K and 17I, and unstable areas adjacent to units 8A and 9E. 24 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning, culvert repair/replacement and restoration of washed out crossings. Bald eagles and osprey are known to occur at the Mad River 1.5 miles from the nearest THP unit. Mahogany fawn lily was found in unit 88, piperia was found was found in unit 24, Kellogg’s lily was found in units 3, 23, and 32, and heartleaf twayblade was found in unit 19. There are 7 spotted owl territories within .7 miles of the THP area.
