Humboldt Redwood Company to log near Carlotta, CA amongst old growth trees in units 1 and 2.

THP 1-20-100 HUM (24 More THP) Humboldt Redwood Company, 771.3 acres; 93% group selection, 5% selection, 2% no-harvest logging. Blanton Creek, Cooper Mill Creek (HUM: T2N R1E, Sec 13; T2N R2E, Sec 8, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21).  Winter operations, moderate erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 55%, landslide terrain, 9 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, coho watershed, spotted owl, marbled murrelet, trees up to 26” dbh.  Estimated public comment deadline: 08/01/20. This THP is about 3 miles NE of Carlotta, CA and Highway 36 at an elevation of 500 to 2,600 feet.  Humboldt Redwood Company is planning a group selection and individual tree selection tractor based logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood, Douglas fir and grand fir forests (scattered residual old growth exist within units 1 and 2).  The THP area flows into the Van Duzen River which is listed as an impaired watershed for sediment/sedimentation and temperature. There are 21 landslide terrain sites in the THP area including; 12 unstable areas outside of THP units, 2 unstable areas in unit 2, 4 unstable areas in unit 3, and 3 unstable areas in unit 4.  Humboldt Redwood Company is planning to use ground based equipment on existing skid trails across unstable areas inside units 2M03 and 2M04, and construct landings during the winter period.  Nine road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement.  The Allen Creek marbled murrelet stand is located within .5 miles of the THP area, and there are 8 spotted owl nesting territories within 1.3 miles of the THP area.
