Mendocino Redwood Company to log SW of Leggett, CA by Highway 1.

THP 1-20-092 MEN (Section 32 THP) Mendocino Redwood Company, 185 acres; 67% variable retention, 20% selection, 13% group selection logging. Cottaneva Creek, Lower Hollow Tree Creek (MD: T23N R17W Sec 30, 31; T23N R18W Sec 25, 36).  Winter operations, high erosion hazard, steep slopes up to 65%, landslide terrain, road failure sites, 36 road drainage work sites, impaired 303.d watershed, herbicides, coho watershed, spotted owl, osprey, northern red legged frog, 2 sensitive plant species, trees up to 42” dbh. This THP is about 5 miles SW of Legggett, CA and about 4 miles NE of Rockport, CA by Highway 1 at an elevation of 1,060 to 1,900 feet.  Mendocino Redwood Company is planning a tractor and cable logging operation on steep and unstable slopes in redwood, Douglas fir, western hemlock and grand fir forests.  There are 2 unstable areas in unit 1, and 7 road related fill failures and cut bank failures.  Mendocino Redwood Company is planning to use ground based equipment on slopes exceeding 50% with a high erosion hazard, and use an existing landing inside a watercourse area, and use 3 segments of roads inside class III (intermittent) watercourse areas.  36 road drainage sites are planned for work including rocking, dip construction, ditch cleaning and culvert repair/replacement.  There is an osprey nest tree in an old growth redwood tree to South Fork Creek within 500 feet of the THP area, and northern red legged frogs were reported at Cottaneva Creek and Hollow Tree Creek.  Two occurrences of Heart-leaf twayblade were reported within South Fork Creek in section 30, and 2 occurrences of Pygmy cypress are located inside section 31.  There are 3 spotted owl nesting territories within .7 miles of the THP area.
